M
Machine direction
The direction in which the paper moves through the paper machine during manufacture (also called longitudinal direction). The majority of fibres in the paper run parallel to the machine direction. This is important for processing (printing, book-binding) as humidity causes paper fibres to stretch differently in the longitudinal and transverse directions.
Machine-finished paper
Types of paper that are only as smooth as they come off the paper machine without glazing/calendering.
Moisture content
The moisture content of a paper is quoted in % absolute or % relative and has a significant influence on the paper's properties. Due to the hygroscopic characters of paper, there is a permanent interaction with ambient humidity. This must always be considered during transport, storage and processing. Papers that are manufactured dry therefore need some form of packaging that protects them from the effects of moisture.
